Mission

The Bread Project (TBP) leverages the power of social enterprise with our bakery training and job placement program to help people break the cycle of poverty. Our mission is to empower individuals with limited resources on their path to self-sufficiency through skills instruction, on-the-job training, and placement assistance in the food industry and beyond.

For over 15 years, TBP has served motivated individuals often re-entering the work force -- refugees, the formerly incarcerated and other low-income persons with multiple barriers to employment. Students gain both "hard" and "soft" skills which help them prepare for any entry level job. Our program model addresses both the needs of our trainees and the large number of unfilled baking and food service/production employment opportunities. Programs target specific food industry sectors showing growth and lower entry requirements.

Our training and bakery facility are located in Berkeley, CA. Classes are open to low-income residents of the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Bakery Bootcamp Job Training & Placement Program and Social Enterprise

Bread Project offers a three-week Bakery Bootcamp program, which provides 56 hours of skills instruction and on-the-job training:
Bakery Production training includes instruction in good manufacturing practices and application of basic baking skills in a fast-paced high volume production environment. This training is geared towards batch food-making jobs.

The program includes job search and placement assistance. Trainees learn about job search, resume writing, interview, and job retention skills, in addition to positive health and life habits, that lead to successful employment outcomes.
Through intensive case management and strategic job development activities, program staff supports trainees to fully participate in their training and secure gainful employment. Lastly, we provide 15 months of follow-up services and supports to help trainees obtain and retain jobs.
