What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Since 1938, the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara (BGCSB) has worked to address a need in the community for quality, affordable after-school programs. BGCSB works year-round to ensure equitable access to resources like tutoring, leadership opportunities, mentoring programs, creative spaces, and athletic leagues for children ages 6-18 in Santa Barbara. Summer and spring-break childcare is also increasingly expensive and our Summer Spectacular Camp and Spring Break Camp are open for only $25 per week. Children also need access to resources like free/reduced price meals, computers, Wifi, extracurricular programs, and community service. BGCSB provides quality resources at no additional charge along with programs intended to build positive relationships with others, a desire to learn, and skills that will benefit children in school as well as later life.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

BGCSB’s goals in 2020 are to:
Ongoing:
 Develop educational programming to bring students of all ages up to grade level in core subjects
 Expand our Computer Lab and STEM-related programs like Science Club and Robotics Club to increase interest in technology and engagement in STEM subjects for students of all ages
 Increase collaborations with local nonprofits to offer higher-quality programs and health resources
 Increase direct involvement of corporate volunteers and Board members in Club programs
 Create new revenue streams through increased fundraising, renovation of facilities to lease to either private schools or an existing licensed early childcare facility
This Year:
-- Successfully merge with United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County to form a countywide youth development agency
-- Renovate our commercial kitchen and make our meal program self-sufficient with food made from scratch

Our strategy for accomplishing goals in 2020 is to increase our outreach to local schools, companies, and volunteers to streamline and improve our programs, obtain more financial and volunteer support, and increase our community involvement. BGCSB also aims to build staff capacity by providing youth development training to existing staff as well as hiring highly-qualified executive staff. As these improvements are made, educational and athletic programs will be restructured and strengthened through greater collective action.

BGCSB has capabilities and characteristics that make us a uniquely powerful youth development center in the Santa Barbara community. The Boys & Girls Club has served Santa Barbara since 1938, allowing staff, alumni, volunteers, parents, and children to build strong bonds of trust and friendship. BGCSB staff also have the training and experience needed to follow through on programs and offer quality opportunities to children of all ages who possess a variety of talents. Whether our members are talented athletes, committed students, or inspired artists and musicians, BGCSB has programs and outlets for their energies and capabilities. As with any nonprofit organization, volunteer and community involvement is much-appreciated but change is primarily affected through increased fundraising. Through various fundraisers, community events, and initiatives, BGCSB has steadily increased revenue in the past three years to meet the needs of working families and adequately fund the programs and resources we offer for children and families in our community.

The following are some of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara’s accomplishments in 2018:
Organizational Accomplishments
 Implemented program evaluation to produce measurable outcomes that led to increased member participation and grant increases from foundations
 Infrastructure of programming was reorganized and reported to Club management, BGCA and foundations based on detailed, verified data
 Evaluated existing program staff and reorganized accordingly
 Verifiable academic progress is now measured by Freckle adaptive learning software based on K-12 Common Core curriculum. By the end of last year we had 80 students actively participating in the program, and this year we have 100 subscriptions and the program is incentivized.
Financial Accomplishments
 The 2018 Budget was implemented and all income goals were met. Last year was extremely challenging for local nonprofits due to natural disasters. Fundraising was difficult due to disruptions in operations for local companies as well the displacement of donors. The income goal was $931,900 and we made $990,357. Expenses were slightly over by 3% due to the implementation of capital projects like bringing the existing portable classrooms up to compliance to become permanent structures for future leasing income
 Donor Development
o Began implementing the Legacy Planned Giving program that includes a monthly giving initiative and Crescendo planned giving system
o Created a concise and accurate grant management system that brought new grants and higher giving that was 128% over income projections for that line item
o Brought in a new Donor Perfect software to create a more effective management system of donors that will improve donor retention, increase donations, and increase donor involvement in the Club’s fundraising and community activities
o Created and implemented a new marketing plan that included social media presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Constant Contact emails. This led to increases in event participation, donations and parent involvement
o The Annual Gala, Golf Tournament, Fiesta Car Show, Community Thanksgiving Dinner and Breakfast with Santa built momentum, brought in new donors, and reconnected with past donors to create a memorable 80th Anniversary celebration
Board of Directors Accomplishments
 Board structure was researched and reformulated to identify areas in which the Board needed additional expertise. In addition, three new members joined the Board to help achieve the long-term goals of the Club and our mission
