What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Scouting
The Boy Scouts of America offers programs to prepare young people for life – making families, communities, our nation and the world a better place for all of us. Over its 111-year history Scouting has offered the time-tested, comprehensive youth development programs of Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA to boys and girls. Greater Los Angeles Area Council is comprised of youth and adults representing most racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, physical and mental abilities, and educational experiences, and is available to all youth in the community.
Scouting prepares young people for life, helping them to become healthy, responsible, engaged and contributing family members and citizens in their communities and the world. A range of age-specific programs for boys and girls ages 5 to 20 feature a learn-by-doing approach. Members practice leadership skills, teamwork, physical and mental fitness and a spirit of service, helping them grow into caring adults of strong character.
Cub Scouts – Cub Scouts is a year-round family- and home-centered program that develops life skills for boys and girls in the kindergarten through fifth grades. Cub Scouts are broken into a small group called a pack, each of which has dedicated leaders and volunteers who are tasked with teaching Cub Scouts both fun and valuable lessons that will help them progress in the program and in life. Activities emphasize character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.
Scouts BSA – A year-round program for boys and girls 11 through 17 designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster. Scouting is the ultimate form of learning by doing. Scouts explore their interests and improve their skills while working toward Scouting’s highest rank: Eagle Scout.
Venturing – is a year-round program for young men and women who are through 20 years of age to provide positive experiences through exciting and meaningful youth-run activities that help them pursue their special interests, grow by teaching others, and develop leadership skills.
Exploring – a year-round program for young men and women ages 14-20 offering unique career-exploration activities and opportunities for participants to explore the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.
Scoutreach – a year-round Scouting outreach program for economically challenged boys and girls ages 5-16, making possible their participation in Cub Scout and Scout BSA programs. Paid staff serve as the primary program leaders, and Greater Los Angeles Area Council also subsidizes costs of membership registration fees, uniforms, activity supplies and advancement recognition items to remove economic barriers so that any child who wants to can participate in Scouting.
