What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Scouting
Tiger Cubs BSA A school-year program for first-grade (or 7-year old) boys and their adult partners that stresses shared leadership, learning about the community, and family understanding. Each boy-adult team meets for family activities, and twice a month all the teams meet for Tiger Cub den activities.Cub Scouting A family and home-centered program that develops ethical decision-making for boys in the second through fifth grades (or who are 8, 9, and 10 years old). Fourth and fifth-grade (or 10-year-old) boys are called Webelos Scouts (WE'll Be Loyal Scouts) and participate in more advanced activities that begin to prepare them to become Boy Scouts. Cub Scouting's emphasis is on quality program at the local level, where boys and families are involved.Boy Scouting A program for boys 11 through 17 designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster. (Boys also may become Boy Scouts if they have earned the Arrow of Light Award or have completed the fifth grade.)Varsity Scouting An active, exciting program for young men 14 through 17 built around five program fields of emphasis: advancement, high adventure, personal development, service, and special programs and events.Venturing A program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age to provide positive experiences through exciting and meaningful activities that help youth pursue their special interests, grow, develop leadership skills, and become good citizens.
Learning For Life
Learning for Life is all-inclusive, serves boys and girls and is provided to children in grades kindergarten through high school. Our mission is to enable young people to become responsible individuals by teaching positive character traits, leadership, career development and life skills so they can make ethical choices and achieve their full potential.
Our Character Development Program is essential to the personal as well as academic success of each student. Classroom teachers implement our curriculum during the school day using grade level teaching guides geared to the appropriate age level. Our school partners believe the program is creating a better environment in the classroom, and on campus, and in the home. However, as you know, funds within the public sector are extremely limited
Exploring
Special Programs
Juvenile Court and Community Schools
Exploring brings representatives from a variety of occupations into participating JCCS classrooms to give these “at risk” students an overview of their job and the training required to become involved. Because we feel that these young people need to know that they can make a good living in this community, lawyers, chefs, nurses, law enforcement agents, military representatives among others have spoken to these young people.
In addition to having speakers come to them, the students have a chance to go off-site. A trip to National University included a tour of the facilities as well as a chance to work in their computer lab under the guidance of experienced teachers who demonstrated how to create and evaluate video games.
This past summer, all students from these schools were invited to a “Day on the Bay” held at Camp Fiesta Island. They went canoeing, kayaking, did leather working and learned about some species that live in our waters.
Summer Academies
For the past two summers, students have had the opportunity to have an intense experience in two fields:
Those enrolled in “Business Basics” learn about finance, investments, insurance, real estate and entrepreneurship from professionals in each area.
From learning basic skills from FBI agents to participating in a “mock trial”, the youth registered in the “Criminal Justice” Post got a first hand view of what is involved in the fascinating field.
