What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Spay and Neuter Program

The overarching goal of Animal Samaritans SPCA’s spay and neuter program is to make low and no-cost spay and neuter services of companion animals available to a wide range of “in need” pet owners. By creating community centered efforts, Animal Samaritans SPCA hopes to popularize and facilitate spay/neuter services throughout the Coachella Valley and end the complications associated with pet overpopulation.

The existing program currently provides these services at no charge to low income residents, qualifying at $ 15,000.00 per year income or less. However, large chunks of the “working poor” are currently in need but not targeted through any formal programming. The existing program is funded from a various targeted fund raising events and money re-allocated from clinic operations. The entire amount is allocated towards the income criteria fund.

Also included under this umbrella is a feral cat program wherein concerned citizens trap feral cats.  They are then brought to Animal Samaritans for their sterilization procedure and they are returned to their feral colony 12 hours later. Trap, Neuter Release (TNR) programs like ours are considered in animal welfare circles to be the gold standard for managing feral cat colonies.

Population(s) Served

Animal Samaritans Inc is a leading Coachella Valley based, full service animal welfare facility and this year 2007 commemorates our 28th year of continuous, distinguished service. Our mission is to promote the welfare of animals in the greater Coachella Valley through our low or no cost vaccination services, no-kill shelter, animal adoption, animal assisted therapy and humane education services.

The humane education component of Animal Samaritans’ program provides an important tool for the three school districts, (Coachella Valley Unified, Desert Sands Unified and Palm Springs Unified), in the area to fulfill their obligation to California Education Code #233.5 which states the following:

"Each teacher shall endeavor to impress upon the minds of the pupils the principles of morality, truth, justice, patriotism and a true comprehension of the rights, duties, and dignity of American citizenship, and the meaning of equality and human dignity, including the promotion of harmonious relations, kindness toward domestic pets and the humane treatment of living creatures, to teach them to avoid idleness, profanity, and falsehood, and to instruct them in manners and morals and the principles of a free government.".

As part of its humane education program Animal Samaritans provides community orientated animal and pet care presentations encompassing diverse needs in the area and is the only non profit in the entire Coachella Valley offering Humane education classes to the local schools. Over the course of 28 years a well defined humane education curriculum has been developed and covers dog bite prevention, responsible and safe pet care, animal CPR classes, animal overpopulation and a flying “wild” component which is a program correlated to National Science Education Standards for middle school students.

Population(s) Served

Animal Samaritans maintains a licensed animal shelter that houses adoptable animals until a responsible home can be found. Animal Samaritans houses cats and dogs . On average, each year about 250 homeless animals are adopted from our shelter.

All cats and dogs are spayed or neutered before they are adopted. Additionally, they are provided necessary medical attention, testing, evaluation and vaccinations.

This service provides a humane safety net for our community's animals. A homeless animal is at risk of disease, injury and even death. It must not be forgotten that this program allows people who can no longer responsibly care for their dog or cat.

Population(s) Served

The Adoption Alliance, in conjunction with the Riverside County Shelter and over 185 fosters and rescues throughout North America, save adoptable “at risk” animals at risk of euthanasia. We rescue approximately 1800 animals every year through this life-saving program.
