Mission

NHMC is a 35 year old nonprofit 501(c)(3) civil rights organization that was founded to eliminate hate, discrimination, and racism towards the Latino community. We educate and increase visibility of Latinx from our policy work in Washington D.C. to our media advocacy work in Hollywood where we collaborate, create, and connect Latinx talent with the entertainment industry. At NHMC we focus on all forms of media because it is one of the most influential and powerful institutions that exist. The media can have important effects on the attitudes, values, and beliefs of society. NHMC collaborates with other social justice organizations to eliminate online hate and hold online platforms accountable for their content.

Notes from the nonprofit

NHMC envisions a world in which U.S. Latinos have media parity and are portrayed as multidimensional people devoid of negative stereotypes.

The efforts of NHMC are critical to the American Latino community due in large part to NHMC’s reputation as one of the most sought-after and credible national, Latino media organizations. This is important because, unless media bias against Latinos is stopped, the present generation of American Latino youth will grow up viewing largely negative images of themselves which only serve to promote low self-esteem and ambitions. Media bias goes beyond negative stereotypes to the lack of Latino presence in the mainstream media. Although American Latinos comprise over 16% of the U.S. population and are resolutely the largest minority group in the country, this important community is still largely invisible in primetime media. NHMC believes that in order for the media to present a fair and sufficient portrayal of the American Latino community, Latinos must be employed at all levels of the media industry with special emphasis on programming and policy making positions.

Series Scriptwriters Program

The NHMC Series Scriptwriters Program (formerly known as the Television Writers Program) started in the Spring of 2003 and since then, it has been held once a year, for a total of 17 years. This Program is designed to familiarize participants with the format, characters and storyline structure of specific shows that are currently on the air. The six-week, total immersion workshop is mentored and led by a former NBC V.P. of Script Development and is conducted in Los Angeles, CA. A total of ten writers are accepted nationwide from an established network of non-profit agencies, schools, universities, guilds and media organizations. The goal is that the writers garner the skills necessary to obtain employment in the industry. The Series Scriptwriters Program simulates a writers’ room and focuses on each participant creating an original series pilot, comedy or drama.
