Homeless Resource Centers
Homelessness is a complex issue that impacts upon all aspects of an individual’s life. On any given night, it is estimated that over 5,000 individuals are homeless within the City and County of Honolulu. The Affordable Housing and Homelessness Alliance maintain Homeless Resource Centers throughout the island of Oahu in areas which currently have little or no access to services: the North Shore, and the Central/Leeward and Windward areas
With the support of our partners we are able to provide support services to homeless individuals and their families. Through the support of volunteers the Centers are staffed throughout the week.
One of the most effective ways to make a difference in a specific social problem is through a community effort of collaboration and action. The goal of the Homeless Resource Centers Program is to establish a grassroots effort to work on the homeless issues faced by individual communities. Individuals and families experience homelessness for a variety of reasons, and the necessary resources to end the cycle of homelessness are often unattainable. The barriers faced by this population include limited resources, poor references, bad credit, lack of affordable housing, lack of education, unemployment, mental illness and substance abuse. These barriers however, are minimal in comparison to the lack of hope. By addressing the issue of homelessness collaboratively, provider agencies and individual communities send the message that individuals and families experiencing homelessness are not alone in their struggle. The program continues to seek individuals and organizations willing to work with us to end homelessness in Hawaii. We want to empower communities to be part of the solution to end homelessness.
The Homeless Resource Centers provides a variety of proactive and individualized services, and serves as a “one-stop shop” for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness.
AmeriCorps Volunteer Porgram
Purpose: The purpose of AmeriCorps Program is to give people an opportunity to give back to their community through a year of community service...
AmeriCorps members provide a needed service by staffing the Homeless Resource Centers, providing services, assisting with special projects and supporting the overall mission of the Affordable Housing and Homeless Alliance. While staff of homeless programs are extremely dedicated, common understaffing and seasonal turnover restrict agencies from increasing their program capacity. Staff is capable of continuing programs that are in place, but develop new programs slowly as time and funds allow. The AmeriCorps program allows staff to operate more efficiently and develop programs beyond the current capability. AmeriCorps members are an asset as they work with existing staff to initiate and develop programs and help to identify and eliminate the weaknesses of current programs. AmeriCorps member activities include neighborhood outreach (to increase the involvement of the larger community) and homeless program development. Such homeless programs enhance homeless individuals’ ability to be self-sustaining and also increase their motivation to become involved in their own development.
Technical Assistance
We work with community groups who are interested in getting involved in the solution to end homelessness. Community groups have a wealth of resources that have not been tapped we are committed to helping those groups get involved and to become part of the solution to Hawai`i’s homeless and housing crisis.
We work with providers from across the State to meet their needs in regards to Technical Assistance. Requests for Technical Assistance are addressed as they arise.
