Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Annual ASH Skateboard Contest Series
Each summer, ASH hosts a four-contest skateboard contest series open to skaters of all ages and genders. The contests are held at public skateparks throughout the State of Hawaii. To date, ASH has hosted contests on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island. The competing divisions are: 13 & Under, 14-16, 17+ and Sponsored. Scores are awarded by experienced judges and tracked throughout the series. Overall winners are awarded all-expense paid trips to Woodward West skateboard camp in Tehachapi, California.
The ASH Skateboard Contest series is one of few public skateboard contest series in the entire country. Our goal is to support Hawaii skateboarders by providing professional-grade events for skaters to compete. Unlike other organized sports, skateboarding has no other recreational associations to support youth talent and passion. Additionally, our goal is to bring together skateboarders and their families from all walks of life to build a supportive community. ASH currently has over 800 members.
ASH Screen Printing and Video Editing Classes
ASH offers free courses to its members in the fields of screen printing and video editing. The goal of these courses in to offer vocational training to the ASH community, as well as encourage artistic creativity. Our hope is to encourage lifelong learning by making content relatable to ASH members' interest area: skateboarding.
In the screen printing course, students create their own design (by hand or by using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator), then learn the compete process of screen printing (emulsion, registration, and successful printing techniques). Students leave the weeklong class with unique t-shirts printed with their design.
In the video editing class, students learn about shooting successful scenes (angles, framing and timing), then use the ASH computer lab to edit the videos using Final Cut Pro X, professional video editing software. Final shorts include music and credits.
These courses provide valuable training in skills that are easily transferrable to the professional workplace. Our hope is that by providing an alternative learning environment, skateboarders leave the classes feeling confident and self assured with a passion for learning.
ASH Public Skatepark Improvement Projects
Since 1997, ASH has worked with the City & County of Honolulu to build and refurbish public skateparks on Oahu. From 1997-2003 ASH worked with Mayor Harris' Vision Committee to work with communities to determine how to develop local parks for area residents. The outcome was the creation and implementation of a Skatepark Construction Plan. Over the course of six years, eight new public skateparks were build on Oahu: Kaneohe, Keolu (Kailua), Makiki, Hawaii Kai, A'ala, Manana (Pearl City), Kapolei and Banzai (North Shore).
Since then, ASH has partnered with Hawaii-based HMSA insurance company to build the Kahuku Skate Plaza, and worked with Councilmember Ron Menor and local skateboarders to rehabilitate the dilapidated Ewa Beach skatepark for public usage.
